MACKENZIE PUT THESE 2 ON ONE HORIZONTAL LINE

Draft for lead story: Second study from University of Queensland research pair retracted from journal after misconduct probe

A second study by two controversial former University of Queensland researchers has been retracted, after statistical problems were found with the data.

The university examined 92 papers by Professor Bruce Murdoch and Dr Caroline Barwood, after problems with an article on Parkinson's disease last year.

Its investigation has now found concerns with the statistical methodology used in a June 2013 multiple sclerosis study by the pair.

The study, titled Cognitive Linguistic Deficits in Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis, had been published in the journal Aphasiology.

A retraction notice on the publisher's website says the study claimed to have a control group of 15, but only seven participants were documented and some data was re-used to enlarge the group.

The retraction was made after advice from the university regarding the study.

The university launched the formal misconduct inquiry into papers by the two researchers published since 2007 after a whistleblower pointed out a 2011 Parkinson's disease study credited to the pair was never actually conducted.

That study had been published in the European Journal of Neurology and heralded a major breakthrough in the treatment of the disease.

But the journal was forced to retract the study last year after the university admitted that it could find no evidence the research was conducted.

The university's subsequent investigation also found "issues with authorship" in a small number of other papers by the pair.

Both Professor Murdoch and Dr Barwood have now left the university.

Professor Murdoch was also on the editorial board of the journal Aphasiology for more than two decades before he stepped aside several months ago.

The ABC understands the latest retraction is not due to intentionally fabricated research data, and instead a statistical error is to blame.
